Pilot Intervention
Numerous accidents could have been avoided if the non‑flying pilot, or another flight deck occupant, had intervened appropriately. An article on this website details the loss of an A321 due to the incapacitation of the pilot flying - there are many others including the loss of a cargo B747 at London Stansted in 1999, the loss of an A320 in the Java sea in 2014, and the loss of an A320 at Karachi in 2020. These deadly accidents represent extreme outcomes yet the conditions leading to the accidents are present in most operational environments. The intervention workshop provides useful information on barriers to intervention, a practical methodology to improve the reliability of interventions and guidance on the limitations and challenges facing flight crews when having to intervene.
Who should attend?
Pilots, Flight Instructors, Line Training Captains, Type Rating Instructors and Examiners, Synthetic Flight Instructors and Examiners, Senior Examiners, Regulators, Aviation Managers, Flight Safety Professionals.
Key Topics
- Case Studies.
- Introduction to a practical intervention model.
- Human behaviour.
- The importance of empowerment and organizational support.
- Technical considerations and simulator exercises (in-seat instruction).
Workshop Objectives
By the end of the Pilot Intervention Workshop, participants will be able to:
- Apply a practical intervention model in varying situations of urgency and aircraft state.
- Understand the barriers to pilot intervention and apply effective techniques to ensure reliable interventions when required.
- Understand the role of organizational culture in supporting operational intervention.
- Understand the technical challenges associated with pilot intervention.
- Deliver appropriate and realistic instruction in pilot intervention, both theory and practice (simulator), and design interventions geared toward local operations.
Prerequisites
A pilot licence or other domain experience is necessary in order to benefit from the facilitative nature of the workshop.
